Lando Norris powered to a dominant victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, securing a crucial win for McLaren and closing the gap to world championship leader Max Verstappen. The Brit, starting from pole position, led from start to finish, ultimately finishing 20 seconds ahead of Verstappen to reduce the title deficit to 52 points with six races remaining.
The victory was a testament to McLaren’s strong performance throughout the race. Oscar Piastri, Norris’ teammate, delivered a stunning drive, climbing from fifth on the grid to third place after a masterful overtaking maneuver on Mercedes’ George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. This result further strengthened McLaren’s grip on the Constructors’ Championship, extending their lead over Red Bull to 41 points.
Verstappen, who has won seven of the opening ten races this season, now goes eight races without a victory. Despite the defeat, he managed to limit the damage in a race that did not favor Red Bull’s car. “On a weekend we knew we were going to struggle, P2 is a good achievement,” said Verstappen.
The race itself lacked the usual drama and excitement associated with the Marina Bay Street Circuit. While overtaking was always a challenge, the lack of a safety car and Norris’ dominant performance meant the action was somewhat subdued.
However, the result reinforces Norris’ growing momentum and puts him firmly in contention for the world championship. The season resumes with the United States Grand Prix in Austin from October 18-20.
