**Chennai:** India dominated the first Test against Bangladesh, securing a resounding victory by 280 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. The win was largely attributed to the exceptional performance of veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, who etched his name in the record books with a remarkable feat.
Ashwin became the oldest Indian to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in a Test match, surpassing a 72-year-old record held by the legendary Vinoo Mankad. He achieved this feat in the first Test against Bangladesh, scoring 113 runs in the first innings and taking 6 wickets in the second.
Ashwin’s century was particularly noteworthy as it came off 133 deliveries, studded with 11 boundaries and 2 sixes. His bowling performance was equally impressive, claiming 6 Bangladesh wickets for 88 runs in 21 overs.
With this remarkable achievement, Ashwin surpassed the record previously held by Vinoo Mankad, who achieved the feat of scoring a century and taking a five-wicket haul in a Test match against England in 1952, when he was 35 years old.
The win also marked Ashwin’s 99th wicket in the fourth innings of Test matches, surpassing Anil Kumble’s previous record of 94 wickets.
India’s victory in the first Test puts them in a commanding position in the two-match series.
