Sat Sep 21 11:37:55 UTC 2024: ## Rahul Gandhi Vows to Fight for Better Working Conditions After Young Professional’s Death

**New Delhi:** Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has pledged to advocate for improved working conditions for professionals in India following the tragic death of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil.

Perayil, who worked at Ernst & Young (EY), died in July 2024 allegedly due to extreme work pressure. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for reform.

Gandhi spoke with Perayil’s parents via video call and expressed his condolences, praising their courage in speaking out about the issue. He assured them that he will fight for this cause in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition.

Gandhi has also instructed the All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC) to launch an awareness campaign in Perayil’s memory. The AIPC will soon announce a helpline to collect information from corporate professionals about issues related to work stress and toxic work culture. This information will be used to develop draft guidelines for better working conditions in the corporate sector.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has called for legislation mandating a fixed working schedule for all workplaces, limiting work to eight hours a day, five days a week. Tharoor stated that “Inhumanity at the workplace must be legislated out of existence with stringent punishment and fines for offenders.”

EY has expressed its condolences and stated that it is working to improve its workplace environment. The Ministry of Labour & Employment is investigating the allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment at the company.
