Sun Sep 22 06:50:57 UTC 2024: ## Rare Polar Bear Sighting in Iceland Ends in Tragic Killing
**Ísafjörður, Iceland:** A rare polar bear sighting in a remote Icelandic village this week sparked panic and resulted in the animal’s death. The bear, believed to have drifted ashore from Greenland on ice floes, was the first recorded in Iceland since 2016.
Despite the animal’s rarity, Icelandic police deemed the bear a threat to local residents and fatally shot it after consulting with the environment agency. The decision was made after a local woman, who was alone in a summer house, locked herself in fear as the bear approached.
“It’s not something we like to do,” a police spokesperson said, adding that the woman had contacted her daughter via satellite link after other residents fled the area.
While polar bears are not native to Iceland, sightings have increased in recent years, with only 600 documented since the ninth century. Experts believe this may be a result of climate change pushing the bears further south in search of food.
The deceased bear will now be taken to the Icelandic Institute of Natural History for further study, including examinations for parasites and infections, an assessment of its organ health and body fat percentage, and potentially preservation of its pelt and skull.
While attacks by polar bears on humans are rare, the incident underscores the potential dangers of human-wildlife encounters. Iceland considers polar bears a protected species but allows their killing if deemed a threat to residents or livestock.
