Chennai, India – In a historic moment, India has claimed its first-ever gold medals in both the men’s and women’s categories at the 45th Chess Olympiad. The men’s team defeated Slovenia in the final round, while the women’s team triumphed over Azerbaijan.
The men’s team victory was secured by impressive wins from D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanadhaa, securing a 3-0 victory over Slovenia. Gukesh, the world championship challenger, showcased his strategic brilliance against Vladimir Fedoseev, while Erigaisi also triumphed over Jan Subelj. Praggnanadhaa’s crushing victory against Anton Demchenko sealed the deal, leaving India with an impressive 21 points out of a possible 22.
The women’s team followed suit with an equally impressive 3.5-0.5 victory over Azerbaijan.
