Sun Sep 22 17:52:21 UTC 2024: ## Pant Shrugs Off Dhoni Comparisons, Hits Century to Lead India to Victory

Chennai, India – Rishabh Pant, making a triumphant return to Test cricket after a long injury layoff, silenced critics and played down comparisons to legendary wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni by scoring a quickfire century in India’s emphatic 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the 1st Test in Chennai on Sunday.

The 26-year-old, often touted as Dhoni’s successor, stressed his desire to forge his own identity in the game. “This is CSK’s home ground, Mahi bhai has played a lot of cricket here. But, for me, I want to be myself. I don’t focus on what’s being said or what’s happening around me,” Pant stated after the match.

Pant’s blistering 109 in the second innings, coupled with Rohit Sharma’s tactical declaration at 287/4, put India in a commanding position. He also revealed that captain Rohit had urged him to accelerate the scoring rate to secure a quick win.

“I kept my thought process simple and played according to the situation. The pitch was good for batting, and I wanted to make the most of it and score a hundred,” Pant said.

The victory marks India’s 12th win in 14 Tests against Bangladesh, solidifying their dominance over their subcontinental rivals. Ravichandran Ashwin, with a first-innings century and a six-wicket haul, was instrumental in dismantling the Bangladeshi batting lineup on Day 4.

Bangladesh, chasing a daunting target of 515, were bowled out for 234, leaving India celebrating a resounding victory. The series now moves to Dhaka for the second Test, where Pant will look to continue his impressive form and further cement his place in the Indian team.
