Sun Sep 22 03:51:38 UTC 2024: ## Australia Clinch Second ODI Win Over England, Extend Unbeaten Run
**Leeds, England:** Australia maintained their dominance over England in the second ODI at Headingley on Saturday, securing a convincing 68-run victory and taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
The world champions, despite losing the toss and struggling at 221-9, were propelled by a magnificent 74-run knock from wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Carey’s blistering innings, laced with eight fours and three sixes, anchored a crucial 49-run last-wicket stand with Josh Hazlewood, helping Australia reach a respectable 270 all out.
England’s reply was severely hampered by early wickets. Veteran fast bowlers Mitchell Starc (3-50) and Hazlewood (2-54), returning after missing the first ODI due to illness, made early inroads, leaving England reeling at 65-5.
Despite Jamie Smith’s valiant 49, no other English batsman could make a significant contribution as England were eventually dismissed for 202, with nearly 10 overs remaining.
This win marks Australia’s 14th consecutive ODI victory, second only to the 21-match unbeaten streak achieved by Ricky Ponting’s side during the 2003 World Cup.
Australia’s captain, Mitchell Marsh, praised the team’s resilience and the importance of crucial partnerships: “We knew it was a new wicket and if we got early wickets we had a chance. It really goes to show those little tail-ender partnerships are really important.”
England captain Harry Brook admitted his team’s struggles: “We lost our way in the powerplay and it didn’t quite come off.”
The two teams will face off again at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday as the series continues.
