Fri Sep 20 08:57:55 UTC 2024: ## Iran Accused of Hacking Biden Campaign, Spreading Disinformation in US Election
**Washington D.C.** – The FBI and other US intelligence agencies have accused Iran of hacking individuals associated with President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and spreading disinformation ahead of the November 5 elections.
According to a joint statement released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Iranian hackers sent unsolicited emails containing stolen material from former President Donald Trump’s campaign. The emails were sent to individuals affiliated with the Biden campaign, with the goal of sowing discord and influencing the election outcome.
This is not the first attempt by Iran to interfere in US elections. The statement notes that Iranian cyber actors have been sending stolen material from the Trump campaign to US media organizations since June. The intelligence community has also warned that Russia, China, and Iran are actively trying to influence US politics and undermine democracy.
Experts believe a network linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) is behind the phishing attacks targeting Vice President Kamala Harris’s email accounts. This network, dubbed Storm-2035, uses AI-generated content to spread misinformation and exacerbate societal divisions.
“Foreign actors are increasing their election influence activities as we approach November,” stated the ODNI joint statement. “Russia, Iran, and China are trying to exacerbate divisions in US society… Efforts by these, or other foreign actors, to undermine our democratic institutions are a direct threat to the U.S. and will not be tolerated.”
The upcoming election will see contests for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 34 Senate seats, and the presidency.
