Ahoy Comics is experiencing a surge in popularity, thanks in part to its latest hit series, “The Toxic Avenger.” The comic, written by Matt Bors and illustrated by Fred Harper, has surpassed the success of “Second Coming,” Ahoy’s previous breakout title.
“The Toxic Avenger” leverages nostalgia and a unique marketing tactic: collectible trading cards. This week, the publisher announced a special variant edition of issue #2, featuring a collectible trading card designed by Steve Ellis, known for his work on “The Only Living Boy” and “Magic: The Gathering.”
“It feels like a very good time to be an Ahoy fan,” said Ahoy Comics Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer. “We’ve had two runaway hits this year with ‘The Toxic Avenger’ and ‘Babs’—both of which have been the most successful Ahoy Comics launches since ‘Second Coming.'”
The comic tells the story of Melvin Junko, a teenager who transforms into the “Toxic Avenger” after a toxic waste incident. The superhero then fights against Biohazard Solutions (BS) and the mutated threats plaguing his town of Tromaville.
“The Toxic Avenger” is the second comic book series from Bors, following his acclaimed “Justice Warriors.” The original “Toxic Avenger” film, a cult classic directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, premiered in 1984.
“The Toxic Avenger” #1 is set to hit stores on October 9, 2024, with issue #2 following on November 13, 2024.
