Fri Sep 20 11:17:39 UTC 2024: ## Olympic Champion Sophia Smith Returns to Portland Thorns, Ready to Conquer the NWSL

**PORTLAND, OR -** Following a triumphant gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics, USWNT forward Sophia Smith is back in Portland, ready to lead the Thorns through the remaining half of the NWSL season. While the team is currently struggling, Smith remains optimistic, fueled by the success of the Olympics and her dedication to the sport.

Smith, who has become a crucial part of the USWNT’s new offensive powerhouse known as “Triple Espresso,” is looking to carry her Olympic momentum back to the club level. This nickname, coined by her teammates Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson, reflects their aggressive, high-energy style of play.

“I feel really proud of myself, and I feel really proud of our team,” Smith told CBS Sports. “I think to have the turnaround that we did within a year from the World Cup, it speaks a lot about our character as players, our character as athletes, the staff that we have that came in and just kind of helped turn things around for us. And it’s a really good and refreshing feeling.”

While Smith is focused on the upcoming NWSL season, she also recognizes the importance of taking time to recharge and appreciate the Olympic achievement. She temporarily disconnected from social media and spent quality time with her family, including her fiancé, NFL wide receiver Michael Wilson.

Despite the challenges of returning to the grueling NWSL schedule after the Olympics, Smith remains excited about the upcoming season and is eager to compete for another championship with the Thorns. “There’s always a new trophy to chase, a new goal that you want to achieve and accomplish,” she said. “So it’s hard, but it’s worth it, and it’s rewarding.”

Smith’s influence extends beyond the field. She is partnering with CLIF Bar and Outdoor Afro, a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring Black connections and leadership in nature. Smith is passionate about promoting outdoor activities and connecting with the African-American community.

“I always want to connect with all communities that hold a special place in my heart,” she said. “Being half black, and actually growing up in Fort Collins, Colorado, it’s a very predominantly white community. So I think for me, growing up and kind of getting out of Fort Collins and seeing the world, it was important to me to kind of connect with the other half of me, and to feel that connection.”

As the Thorns fight for a playoff spot, Smith’s presence on the field will be crucial. The team faces a challenging schedule, but with Smith’s leadership and unwavering determination, they stand a chance to secure their place in the playoffs and continue their journey towards another championship.
