Fri Sep 20 13:18:48 UTC 2024: ## Russia Warns NATO Against Arctic Expansion, Vows Military Response

**MOSCOW** – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has issued a stark warning to NATO, declaring that the Arctic “is not the territory of the North Atlantic alliance” and asserting that Russia is “fully ready” to defend its interests there militarily.

Lavrov’s comments, made in a documentary series, come amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine. He pointed to increased NATO drills in the Arctic as evidence of the alliance’s expansionist ambitions in the region.

“Our country is fully ready to defend its interests militarily, politically and from the standpoint of defense technologies,” Lavrov stated, echoing Moscow’s repeated threats of nuclear war against NATO in recent years.

The Arctic, home to eight nations including Russia, Norway, Canada, and the US, has become a focal point of strategic interest as the region’s ice melts, opening up new shipping routes and access to resources.

While all Arctic states except Russia are NATO members, Lavrov stressed that other non-Arctic countries like China and India also have interests in the region. He further warned that Finland, a new NATO member, would be “the first to suffer” in the event of a conflict between Russia and the alliance.

In a further escalation, Russia has suspended its participation in the Arctic Council, an intergovernmental forum of Arctic nations, following the boycott by other members in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Lavrov’s latest pronouncements have been met with skepticism and ridicule by some world leaders. The German Foreign Ministry responded with a dismissive “Seriously?”, while Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov quipped, “How could you do that, Elon?” in reference to a recent tech-related incident.

Despite Lavrov’s aggressive rhetoric, some cooperation between Russia and other Arctic states has since resumed. However, the ongoing tensions highlight the growing strategic rivalry in the Arctic, a region increasingly crucial for global security and resources.
