A new rumor has emerged suggesting Sony’s upcoming PS6 console will come in two variants, one with an affordable price tag. While this could be welcomed news for gamers concerned about the PS5 Pro’s high price, it has also sparked worry among some players.
The rumor originates from AMD leaker KeplerL2, known for their accurate insights into the chip manufacturing industry. Kepler claims two System-on-a-Chip (SoCs) are being developed for the PS6, with one designed to be “affordable.”
This suggests Sony isn’t simply releasing a disc-based and digital-only version like they did with the PS5, as both would use the same SoC. Instead, the two variants could be a home console paired with a handheld/remote player, or a cheaper console with reduced specs. It’s the latter possibility that has players apprehensive.
Sony has traditionally avoided releasing “inferior” consoles, citing the issues faced by developers targeting the Xbox Series S. If Sony follows Microsoft’s lead, this could limit the PS6’s capabilities and result in a generation held back by subpar specs.
However, the handheld possibility is intriguing. Sony’s PS Portal has been successful, and the company may be planning a more robust device that can act as both a PS6 companion and a standalone handheld, as rumored previously.
While the rumor is still unconfirmed, it’s sparked a debate about Sony’s potential direction for the PS6 and the possible implications for gaming.
