Fri Sep 20 08:57:55 UTC 2024: ## North Korea Flexes Military Muscle with New Missile Tests
**Pyongyang, DPRK –** North Korea has conducted another round of missile tests, marking its third such display of military power in a week. The tests, which involved new tactical ballistic missiles and a modified cruise missile, were overseen by Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and were described as a response to perceived threats from external forces.
The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the tests involved the newly developed Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5 missiles, short-range ballistic missiles equipped with 4.5-ton conventional warheads. The agency also announced the successful test of a modified strategic cruise missile.
Kim Jong-un, according to KCNA, stressed the need to bolster North Korea’s nuclear force and strengthen its conventional weapons capability. He cited the ongoing military exercises conducted by South Korea and the United States as a primary threat, labelling them as preparations for war.
South Korea’s military confirmed the launch of two ballistic missiles, which landed in a mountainous area in North Korea’s northeast. This follows a series of previous launches, including a salvo of short-range ballistic missiles fired the day before.
The recent escalation in missile tests comes amidst increasing military activity by the US in the region, including the deployment of long-range bombers, submarines, and aircraft carrier strike groups for joint exercises with South Korea and Japan.
North Korea has condemned these exercises as provocative and a justification for expanding US military presence in the region. The situation has been further inflamed by the signing of a trilateral security pact between the US, South Korea, and Japan at Camp David in August 2023, which has drawn criticism from North Korea, China, and Russia.
These events highlight the growing tension on the Korean Peninsula and raise concerns about the potential for further escalation and conflict.
