Fri Sep 20 08:57:55 UTC 2024: ## Putin Calls for Mass Drone Production in Russia, Emphasizing Importance for Security

**St Petersburg, Russia** – President Vladimir Putin, in a videoconference meeting of the Military-Industrial Commission on Special Purpose UAVs on Gunsmith Day, stressed the crucial role of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in modern warfare and called for a significant increase in their production.

Putin acknowledged the progress made in drone development and production, with over 140,000 UAVs of various types delivered to the Russian Armed Forces in 2023. However, he emphasized the need to further accelerate production, improve combat performance through AI integration, and continuously modernize drones based on combat experience.

He also highlighted the importance of counter-drone capabilities to protect troops, civilian infrastructure, and critical facilities.

“We need to fully meet the needs of the Armed Forces,” Putin said, emphasizing the need to not only produce drones in mass quantities but also develop future technologies.

Putin expressed appreciation for the “people’s defense sector,” where small and medium-sized businesses are contributing significantly to UAV production alongside larger companies. He encouraged collaboration and support for these businesses, recognizing their vital role in ensuring the country’s technological sovereignty.

The meeting focused on the “Unmanned Aviation Systems” national project launched this year, which aims to facilitate the design and production of domestic components and materials for UAVs. Putin emphasized the importance of synergy between large research centers, major companies, and small businesses to achieve the project’s ambitious goals.

By 2030, Russia plans to establish 48 specialized research and production centers dedicated to drone development, testing, and mass production.

Putin’s speech highlighted the strategic importance of drones in Russia’s defense strategy, emphasizing the country’s commitment to strengthening its technological capabilities and securing its national security.
