Fri Sep 20 11:41:48 UTC 2024: ## Chinese Man Jailed for Stealing Credit Card on Flight to Singapore

**SINGAPORE** – A Chinese national, Jiang Yangbo, 30, was sentenced to seven months in jail for stealing a credit card from a fellow passenger on an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.

The incident occurred on May 16 when Jiang, seated behind the victim, Jin Chengjie, a 36-year-old Chinese national working in Singapore, removed Jin’s laptop bag from the overhead compartment. Jiang then rummaged through the bag, took Jin’s Citibank credit card and placed it in his pocket before returning the bag and going to the bathroom.

A fellow passenger witnessed the theft and noticed that Jiang only had a sling bag with him upon landing at Changi Airport. Realizing the laptop bag belonged to Jin, the passenger informed him about witnessing Jiang taking something from the bag. Jin soon discovered his credit card was missing and promptly cancelled it.

Upon noticing the exchange, Jiang tossed the credit card back into the overhead compartment to avoid being caught. The card was later recovered by another passenger and found to have not been misused.

The victim and witness reported the incident to an auxiliary police officer, who arrested Jiang. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced last Friday.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) expressed zero tolerance for theft on aircraft and pledged to apprehend and severely punish offenders. The SPF advised passengers to keep valuables close by rather than placing them in overhead luggage compartments. They also urged passengers to be vigilant of individuals rummaging through bags during flights and to report any suspicious behavior to the cabin crew immediately.
