Fri Sep 20 11:43:30 UTC 2024: ## Lancashire Secure Victory, Surrey Clinch Third Consecutive County Championship Title

Lancashire secured a 168-run victory over Somerset at Emirates Old Trafford, ending Somerset’s hopes of a maiden County Championship title. The win, however, does little to boost Lancashire’s own chances of avoiding relegation, with their fate still hanging in the balance ahead of the final round of matches.

Luke Wells was the hero for Lancashire, scoring a century in the first innings and then claiming four wickets in the second, including a crucial golden duck to dismiss Lewis Gregory on the fourth morning. Anderson Phillip also played a key role, taking three wickets, including the final one to dismiss James Rew for 31 and end the match.

The win for Lancashire was their third of the season, while Somerset’s defeat sees them slip to third in the table, below Hampshire who leapfrogged them with a victory against Worcestershire.

Surrey’s third consecutive County Championship title was confirmed with Somerset’s loss, making them the undisputed champions of the competition.

Lancashire captain Keaton Jennings expressed his delight with his team’s performance, highlighting the contributions of Wells and the bowlers in securing the win. Somerset head coach Jason Kerr admitted disappointment with the result but praised his team’s progress throughout the season.
