Philadelphia, PA – Vice President Kamala Harris has pledged to actively earn the support of Black male voters ahead of the upcoming election. Speaking at a National Association of Black Journalists event in Philadelphia, Harris emphasized that she will not take their vote for granted, stating that “Black men are like any other voting group. You gotta earn their vote, so I’m working to earn the vote, not assuming I’m gonna have it because I’m Black but because of the policies and the perspectives I have.”
Her comments come amid recent polling data suggesting a potential decrease in support for Democrats among Black men. A New York Times/Siena College poll found that 17% of Black voters are currently backing Donald Trump, with 9% undecided. Additionally, an NAACP poll indicated that one in four Black men under 50 plan to support Trump. These numbers represent a significant shift from the 2020 election, where President Biden garnered 92% of the Black vote.
Experts attribute this potential shift to various factors, including historical resentment of Black women in leadership positions, misinformation campaigns targeting Black men, and a perceived slow pace of progress on issues affecting the Black community.
Democratic political advisor Antjuan Seawright highlights the complexity of the Black vote, emphasizing that Black men are not a monolithic group and are often subject to misinformation. He believes that the “wheels of progress” have turned too slowly for some Black men, leading to frustration.
Political commentator Reecie Colbert argues that the narrative surrounding Black men and their support for Harris is often misrepresented. She highlights that Black men are in fact a very engaged demographic, and are the second highest supporter group for Vice President Harris. Colbert insists that Black men want their issues addressed and are simply seeking assurances that their lives will improve under a Harris administration.
With 34.4 million eligible Black voters, the Black vote remains a crucial factor in the upcoming election. Vice President Harris’s focus on earning the support of Black men will be crucial in mobilizing this demographic and ensuring their continued support for the Democratic party.
