Turin, Italy – Juventus manager Thiago Motta has dismissed the hype surrounding Saturday’s clash with Napoli, emphasizing his focus on improving his team’s form rather than the reunion with former manager Antonio Conte.
Motta, who played under Conte during the 2016 Euros, acknowledged their strong relationship but stated that “tomorrow it’s Juventus-Napoli.” He stressed the importance of his players showcasing their abilities and delivering a strong performance.
The match comes after Juventus’ two-match goalless streak in Serie A, following their opening two victories. While Napoli is on a three-game winning streak, Conte’s return to Turin after his successful stint as both player and manager at the club adds an extra layer of intrigue.
Despite the nostalgia surrounding Conte’s return, Motta remains focused on his team’s domestic ambitions. He highlighted the progress of striker Dusan Vlahovic, who struggled to capitalize on chances in the Champions League opener against PSV Eindhoven.
“He must always have the ambition to improve, just like everyone else, starting with me,” Motta said. “His play alongside the team is improving.”
While acknowledging Napoli’s strength and ambitions for the Scudetto, Motta downplayed the potential advantage of Napoli not competing in European competitions this season. He emphasized that Juventus’ calendar is demanding, and they must focus on each game individually.
Motta confirmed that center-back Federico Gatti, who sustained a minor injury against PSV, will be available for the match against Napoli. However, forward Francisco Conceicao remains sidelined.
Juventus will face Genoa next Saturday before traveling to RB Leipzig in the Champions League four days later.
