Fri Sep 20 13:27:25 UTC 2024: ## India Races to Lead in 6G and Quantum Tech: New Research Hub Established

**Bangalore, India -** India is making a determined push to become a global leader in next-generation technologies, with the establishment of a new research hub dedicated to quantum technology and 6G innovation. This initiative, part of the Ministry of Communications’ 100-day plan for accelerating technological advancements, will be spearheaded by the Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE) in partnership with the Visvesvaraya Research & Innovation Foundation (VRIF).

The new Centre of Excellence (CoE), located on the Bangalore campus of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), will serve as a crucial R&D facilitator for the university’s 228 affiliated colleges. The CoE aims to empower over 400,000 students, including 2,000 PhDs, to “streamline R&D and drive the commercialisation of groundbreaking innovations.”

The focus of research will be on quantum technology and its associated 5G/6G technologies, as well as “other frontier areas” such as artificial intelligence. The CoE will also coordinate R&D efforts with key organizations including the Telecom Engineering Centre, TSDSI, India’s standards development organization (SDO), and the Bharat 6G Alliance.

Launched last year, the Bharat 6G Alliance brings together public and private companies, academia, research institutions, and standards development organizations. Key members include telecom operators Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea, as well as IT giants Tech Mahindra and Tata Consultancy Services.

India is determined to avoid falling behind in the global race for 6G innovation, having previously faced challenges in adopting 4G and 5G technology. The country is also aiming to be a frontrunner in quantum computing, which has the potential to revolutionize digital processes and cybersecurity.

In April 2023, the Indian government announced a $730 million investment for the National Quantum Mission, with the goal of making India a leader in the development and application of quantum technologies. This latest initiative to establish the CoE underscores India’s commitment to achieving this ambitious goal.
