**New York, NY** – The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) announced today that the prestigious IEEE Medal of Honor, the highest award bestowed by the organization, will now carry a prize of $2 million, effective from 2025 onwards. This significant increase, approved by the IEEE Board of Directors, underscores the organization’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding groundbreaking technological achievements that have a transformative impact on society.

The Medal of Honor has been awarded since 1917 to individuals whose work has revolutionized various fields, from the creation of the internet to the development of life-saving medical technologies like the CAT scan and pacemaker. Past recipients include Edwin Howard Armstrong, who invented FM radio, and Robert Kahn, co-developer of the internet’s fundamental communication protocols.

“IEEE Medal of Honor laureates dare to envision the new and revolutionary, and make possible what was previously considered impossible,” stated K.J. Ray Liu, former IEEE president and advocate for the prize increase. “Their seismic accomplishments inspire today’s technologists to continue advancing technology for the betterment of the world.”

The recipient of the 2025 IEEE Medal of Honor, with its newly-increased prize, will be announced at a press conference in New York City on January 2025. The ceremony itself will be held in Tokyo, Japan, in April 2025, marking a first for the IEEE Honors Ceremony.

With its substantial prize, the IEEE Medal of Honor joins the ranks of other prestigious awards like the Nobel Prizes and the ACM Turing Award in recognizing and celebrating transformative achievements in science and technology.
