**Los Angeles, CA** – Walt Disney Company has announced its plans to phase out Slack as its company-wide collaboration tool following a significant data breach. The decision comes after the hacking group NullBulge exposed over a terabyte of internal data from thousands of Disney’s Slack channels, including unreleased project details and sensitive information.
The breach, which included more than 44 million messages, prompted Disney CFO Hugh Johnston to announce the company’s transition away from Slack in an email to staff. “Senior leadership has made the decision to transition away from Slack across the company,” Johnston wrote. “Our technology teams are now managing the transition off Slack by the end of Q1 FY25 for most businesses.”
While some more complex use cases may require additional time, Disney expects the full migration to be completed by Q2 2025. The decision comes despite recent updates to Slack, including the integration of AI agents and assistants from partners like Adobe and Anthropic.
The data breach exposed internal conversations, unfinished projects, passwords, usernames, and information about internal APIs. NullBulge, the hacking group responsible for the attack, claims to be a “hacktivist group protecting artists’ rights and ensuring fair compensation for their work.” They are known for exploiting vulnerabilities in software supply chains via platforms like GitHub and Hugging Face.
This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of businesses to data breaches, even with sophisticated collaboration platforms. Disney’s decision to abandon Slack underscores the importance of data security and the need for companies to carefully evaluate their reliance on third-party software providers.
