**Tel Aviv** – The 64th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus’ independence was marked in Tel Aviv with a reception highlighting the close ties between Israel and Cyprus, as well as the shared history of both countries with Palestine.

The event, which also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, featured a photo exhibition showcasing the suffering endured by Greek Cypriots under Turkish occupation.

Cyprus Ambassador Kornelios Korneliou underscored the long-standing friendship between the two countries, dating back to the British Mandate period. He highlighted the role of Cyprus as a transit point for Holocaust survivors seeking refuge in the Holy Land and mentioned that over 2,000 Jewish babies were born on the island during this period.

Despite the shared history, Cyprus maintains strong relations with Palestine and recognized the State of Palestine in 1988. This was acknowledged in a video message from Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who praised Cyprus for its humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.

The reception also emphasized the growing cooperation between Israel and Cyprus in energy and security, particularly since the recent escalation of conflict in Gaza. Ambassador Korneliou expressed Cyprus’ support for Israel while also calling for an end to the violence and loss of life.

Israeli Culture and Sport Minister Miki Zohar echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of the relationship between the two countries. He also expressed appreciation for Cyprus’ support of Israel during the ongoing conflict.

The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the human cost of conflict, emphasizing that innocent civilians on all sides are caught in the crossfire. The reception concluded with a traditional Cypriot buffet, showcasing the island nation’s culinary delights.
