**Madrid, Spain** – LaLiga President Javier Tebas has been publicly reprimanded by Spain’s Administrative Sports Court (TAD) following a complaint filed by Real Madrid. The court found that Tebas had violated procedural rules when calling a General Assembly meeting in August 2021 to discuss the controversial €2 billion ($2.2 billion) investment deal with CVC Capital Partners.
Real Madrid accused Tebas of “abuse of power” and “lack of transparency” in the handling of the assembly, which was held with only eight days’ notice instead of the required ten. The club also alleged that Tebas failed to adequately explain the urgency of the meeting.
While Tebas has avoided suspension, LaLiga has strongly disputed the TAD’s ruling, calling it “completely disagreed with.” The organization plans to appeal the decision, claiming that the assembly was convened in accordance with all statutory requirements.
The CVC deal, which granted the private equity firm a stake in LaLiga’s broadcasting rights, sparked significant controversy within Spanish football. While most clubs voted in favor of the deal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Club fiercely opposed it.
The TAD’s reprimand of Tebas highlights the ongoing tensions within Spanish football over the CVC deal, as well as the scrutiny surrounding the LaLiga president’s management of the organization.
