New York-based comedian Ashley Gavin, known for her popular TikTok account with over 1.4 million followers, has successfully conquered one of the most challenging traditional hallmarks in comedy: a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Gavin’s show, “My Therapist is Dying”, is a hilarious and poignant hour of stand-up that chronicles her experience navigating anxiety and dealing with her therapist’s terminal cancer diagnosis. The show was a hot ticket at the Fringe, selling out all performances and prompting the addition of extra shows, which also sold out.
Prior to her comedic success, Gavin held a software engineering position at MIT Lincoln Lab, working on national security projects. She later transitioned to writing curriculum for the non-profit organization Girls Who Code before ultimately choosing comedy over computers. Since then, she has been featured on Netflix is a Joke, Hulu, and Comedy Central. Gavin also hosts the popular podcast “We’re Having Gay Sex”, which boasts a significant following and has featured guests like Jojo Siwa and comedian Hannah Berner. Notably, she is also Carnival Cruise line’s first openly gay performer.
Gavin spoke to Deadline about her sold-out Fringe run, the impact of social media on the comedy landscape, and her experience navigating online “cancellation” after a controversial joke. She attributes the success of her Fringe show to word-of-mouth, highlighting the festival’s unique atmosphere where audiences are solely focused on the art of comedy.
The comedian also discussed the evolving nature of comedy, acknowledging the shift away from traditional paths to success, such as late-night appearances and Comedy Central specials. She believes that social media has created a more fragmented landscape where comedians need to be both good and go viral.
Gavin’s Fringe show showcased a strong narrative structure, a rarity for comedy in the UK. She attributed this to extensive rehearsals, emphasizing the importance of finding an audience to test material before a major event like the Fringe.
Gavin’s performance is highly theatrical, blurring the lines between stand-up and acting. She expressed her interest in pursuing formal acting opportunities, despite the challenges faced by semi-masculine lesbians in casting.
Looking ahead, Gavin is working on a new special, set to be more traditional stand-up, and will be embarking on a US and Australian tour. She also plans to continue her popular podcast.
Gavin’s success at the Edinburgh Fringe exemplifies the power of both traditional and new-age comedy. Her story serves as a reminder that in today’s ever-evolving entertainment landscape, finding your unique voice and connecting with your audience can lead to incredible success.
