Thu Sep 19 09:00:00 UTC 2024: ## HR: A Thankless Job In A World of Growing Discontent

**Las Vegas, NV** – The human resources department, once a bastion of employee support and development, is now facing increasing scrutiny and dissatisfaction from both employees and its own ranks. A recent conference for HR professionals revealed a growing sense of frustration and disillusionment within the field.

The pandemic, with its remote work policies, pay transparency mandates, and focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, has significantly shifted the workplace landscape, leaving HR professionals grappling with a growing list of challenges and a feeling of being undervalued.

“Everything feels like a fool’s errand,” said Kyle Lagunas, a former HR executive at General Motors, reflecting a sentiment shared by many attendees. The increased workload and constant pressure to manage workplace conflicts and implement new initiatives are taking a toll.

“Employees don’t see the value in a lot of the things HR does,” says Hebba Youssef, chief people officer at Workweek, highlighting the growing mistrust and negative perception surrounding HR. “People in HR tend to be very compassionate, very empathetic. But a lot of employees look at us as inherently evil.”

The history of HR reveals a shift from a focus on employee welfare to a more business-centric approach, viewing employees as assets rather than people. This has created a perception of HR as a department solely serving the interests of management, further exacerbating the divide between employees and HR.

“It’s a thankless job,” Lagunas concludes. Despite facing increasing challenges and criticism, HR professionals continue to strive for a more equitable workplace, but their efforts often go unnoticed, leading to a sense of burnout and a high turnover rate.

The future of HR is uncertain, but one thing is clear: addressing the growing dissatisfaction within the department and changing the perception of its role is crucial to restoring trust and building a more supportive workplace for everyone.
