**New Delhi, India:** Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi has climbed to the second spot in the global smartphone market in August, surpassing Apple in terms of monthly sell-through volume, according to Counterpoint Research.
This marks the first time in three years that Xiaomi has held the number two position. Samsung continues to hold the top spot.
Xiaomi’s success is attributed to strong demand for its budget-friendly Redmi 13 and Redmi Note 13 series 5G smartphones, priced under $200. These devices have helped Xiaomi gain significant market share in key regions like India, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Middle East, and Africa.
Despite remaining flat in shipments for August, Xiaomi’s growth is partially attributed to Apple’s seasonal decline in shipments ahead of the launch of its iPhone 16 series. As Apple ramps up sales of its new iPhone models in the coming months, they are expected to reclaim their position at the top or second spot.
Overall, Xiaomi experienced strong growth in the first half of 2024, registering a 22 percent year-over-year increase in sales volume. While growth is likely to moderate in the second half, Xiaomi is still projected to achieve significant double-digit growth for the full year of 2024.
