Thu Sep 19 07:46:54 UTC 2024: ## Welsh Labour Defends Winter Fuel Payment Cuts Amidst Concerns for Pensioners

The Welsh Labour government has faced criticism from Conservative members of the Senedd over its decision to support the UK government’s move to cut universal winter fuel payments for pensioners.

The Conservatives, citing research showing a potential increase in excess deaths, argued that the cut could push thousands of pensioners into fuel poverty, especially those with chronic illnesses or living in cold homes.

Joel James, Conservative MS for South Wales East, accused Labour of “short-sightedness” and “callousness,” warning that over 100,000 pensioners in his region alone could lose up to £300 each.

Plaid Cymru MS Sioned Williams also criticized the decision, arguing that it continued the austerity measures of the previous Conservative government and deepened inequality.

The Welsh Labour government, however, defended its position, citing a £22 billion black hole in the public purse created by “14 years of Tory austerity.” Social Justice Secretary Jane Hutt insisted that the government would utilize “all the levers and powers” available to support older people affected by the cut.

Despite the criticism, Labour ultimately defeated the Conservative motion calling for the restoration of universal winter fuel payments, with 24 votes to 23. The debate highlighted the ongoing tension between the Welsh Labour government and the UK government over austerity measures and the impact on vulnerable populations.
