Thu Sep 19 06:23:43 UTC 2024: ## Biden Administration to Host Global AI Safety Summit Amidst Growing Concerns

The Biden administration announced plans to convene a global summit on artificial intelligence (AI) safety in San Francisco on November 20-21. This summit, the first meeting of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, brings together experts from Australia, Canada, the EU, France, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Singapore, Britain, and the US to address the potential risks posed by AI.

The rise of generative AI, which can create realistic text, images, and videos, has sparked both excitement and fears. Concerns include job displacement, election interference, and the possibility of AI surpassing human control.

The summit aims to jumpstart technical collaboration before the AI Action Summit in Paris in February and establish “rules of the road” for AI development that prioritize safety, security, and trust, according to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

Technical experts from each member’s AI safety institute will discuss priority work areas and advance global collaboration on AI safety. This comes as the US government pushes for increased regulation, proposing reporting requirements for advanced AI developers and cloud providers to ensure safety and cybersecurity.

Despite growing concerns, legislative action on AI in Congress has stalled. However, President Biden has already signed an executive order requiring developers of high-risk AI systems to share safety test results with the government before public release. The upcoming summit signals a renewed focus on international cooperation in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.
