Thu Sep 19 08:03:31 UTC 2024: ## UN Demands Israel End “Unlawful Presence” in Occupied Palestinian Territories Within a Year

**New York, NY** – The United Nations General Assembly adopted a Palestinian-drafted resolution demanding Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. The resolution, which passed with 124 votes in favor, isolates Israel days before world leaders gather in New York for the annual UN gathering.

The resolution cites a July advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declaring Israel’s occupation and settlement building in Palestinian territories illegal. It also calls for countries to cease importing products from Israeli settlements and to halt arms transfers to Israel unless there are guarantees they won’t be used in occupied territories.

The US, a long-time ally and arms supplier to Israel, voted against the resolution, arguing it undermines the possibility of a two-state solution. Australia, however, abstained, citing its desire for a resolution more closely aligned with the ICJ opinion.

The resolution, the first formally put forward by the Palestinian Authority since gaining enhanced UN membership, carries significant political weight, though it is not legally binding.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 26, condemned the resolution as “diplomatic terrorism.” He is expected to address the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza, where Israel has been conducting a military operation since October 7, 2023.

The war in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians and the displacement of millions. Meanwhile, tensions are also rising on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, where Israel is engaged in an exchange of fire with Hezbollah.

The General Assembly vote highlights the growing international pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories and underscores the ongoing conflict’s impact on global diplomacy.
