Thu Sep 19 07:27:34 UTC 2024: ## UN Condemns Deadly Pagers Explosions in Lebanon as Violation of International Law

**New York, IRNA** – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has condemned the recent wave of explosions targeting paging devices in Lebanon, calling it a violation of international law. The explosions, which have killed at least nine people and injured over 300, were reportedly aimed at members of the Lebanese Hezbollah.

Turk stated that targeting thousands of individuals simultaneously, without knowing their location or surroundings, constitutes a breach of international human rights and humanitarian law. He emphasized the need to hold those responsible for the attacks accountable.

The mass explosion of pagers, believed to be of the ICOM V82 type, occurred amid heightened tensions following cross-border attacks between Hezbollah and Israel. The incidents were sparked by a brutal Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in over 41,200 casualties, predominantly women and children, following a retaliatory attack by Hamas last October.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on the eve of the 79th General Assembly of Heads of State, urged world leaders to embrace compromise in addressing global challenges and crises. He emphasized the insufficiency of current institutions and frameworks to tackle complex conflicts like those in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan, which did not exist when multilateral institutions were established 80 years ago.
