Thu Sep 19 05:40:24 UTC 2024: ## UN Demands End to Israeli Occupation, Imposes 12-Month Deadline

The United Nations General Assembly has voted to formally demand an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months, with sanctions threatened for non-compliance. The non-binding resolution, which Israel vehemently condemned as “cynical” and “distorted”, was based on a recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion deeming the occupation unlawful.

The resolution, adopted with 124 votes in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions, was hailed as “historic” by the Palestinian delegation. It calls for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces, a halt to new settlements, the return of seized land and property, and the possibility of return for displaced Palestinians. The resolution also urges states to cease arms provisions to Israel if there are reasonable grounds to suspect their use in the occupied territories.

The vote comes amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. While Israel rejects the resolution, the Palestinian delegation believes it will put pressure on the Israeli government to change its policies.

The United States, Israel’s key ally, voted against the resolution alongside Hungary, the Czech Republic, and several smaller island nations. While the Security Council remains largely paralyzed on the Gaza issue due to US vetoes, the General Assembly has adopted several texts supporting Palestinian civilians.

The resolution’s passage comes just days before the annual UN General Assembly meeting, where world leaders will gather to address global challenges. It is expected to further intensify diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.
