**Bangkok, Thailand** – Eight former Thai security personnel will be prosecuted for their roles in the 2004 Tak Bai killings, where 78 protesters suffocated after being piled on top of each other in army trucks. The announcement, made by the Attorney General’s office on Wednesday, comes just weeks before the statute of limitations expires on October 25th.
The incident, one of the deadliest in Thailand’s ongoing conflict in the southern provinces, saw protesters arrested at a rally outside a police station and then crammed into the backs of military trucks.
“The suspects could have foreseen that their actions would have led to the suffocation and deaths of the 78 people under their responsibility,” Attorney General spokesperson Prayut Bejaguran stated.
The government at the time, led by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, expressed regret but denied wrongdoing. Police initially claimed some protesters were armed.
The case has been the subject of intense scrutiny and pressure from victims’ families, who have campaigned for justice for over two decades. Last month, a Thai court accepted a related complaint filed by the families against seven former senior security personnel.
Last week, a Narathiwat court summoned a former military commander and issued arrest warrants for six retired senior security personnel after they failed to appear for a criminal hearing. The commander is now a politician with the ruling Pheu Thai Party.
The conflict in Thailand’s predominantly Muslim southern provinces has seen over 7,600 people killed in the past 20 years. The latest development marks a significant step towards accountability and potentially towards healing in the region.
