**LIMERICK, IRELAND** – Munster Rugby has secured the services of 25-year-old South African winger Thaakir Abrahams, known for his electrifying speed and elusive running style, reminiscent of Springbok legend Cheslin Kolbe. Abrahams, who recently transferred from French club Lyon, joins the Irish club for the upcoming United Rugby Championship campaign.

“I’m delighted to finally be at Thomond Park,” said Abrahams, who made his Munster debut in a pre-season match against Gloucester. “I’m excited to get stuck into the preseason work.”

Despite limited playing opportunities in France, Abrahams impressed with his try-scoring abilities, scoring five tries in four Champions Cup matches, including two against the Bulls and Connacht.

“Scoring twice against the Bulls was special,” he said. “It’s a big deal to compete in the Champions Cup, facing teams from across Europe.”

Abrahams acknowledges the challenges of adapting to the European style of play, particularly in defense, which he actively worked on in France. “The style of play is somewhat different, but I love it,” he said. “I like the continuity of play and the counter-attacking.”

While he admires Kolbe’s achievements, Abrahams recognizes that his own path has been shaped by the challenges he faced as a child due to visual impairment. “I had to wear thick glasses and when I took them off to play rugby, I could hardly see anything,” he explained. It was only after receiving contact lenses that he was able to fully immerse himself in the game.

Despite his initial struggles, Abrahams’ natural talent blossomed. He excelled in his youth, representing Western Province at various age groups and captaining the famed Paarl Boys High School First XV. His impressive performances earned him a spot in the Junior Springboks, where he scored two tries in the bronze-medal victory at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

“Thaakir has certainly done that,” said former Sharks coach Sean Everitt, referring to Abrahams’ ability to make a mark at the top level despite his smaller stature. “What Cheslin has done is to open doors for players like me, who aren’t as big in physique, to excel.”

Abrahams’ journey to Munster signifies his dedication and determination to succeed. He is eager to prove his worth in the United Rugby Championship and will undoubtedly be a thrilling addition to the Munster backline.
