Thu Sep 19 08:00:00 UTC 2024: ## TikTok Smugglers Exploit Vulnerable Indian Migrants in Canada, Facilitating Illegal Border Crossings into the U.S.

**Montreal, Canada** – A recent investigation by Radio-Canada has uncovered a disturbing trend of TikTok accounts actively promoting and facilitating illegal border crossings from Canada into the United States, targeting Indian temporary residents in Canada. These accounts offer “safe passage” through remote areas, often involving dangerous treks through dense jungles, for a hefty price.

The investigation found that these accounts, some with over 360,000 followers, boast testimonials from supposed satisfied clients who claim to have crossed the border without incident. However, the reality is much more perilous. Radio-Canada’s undercover investigation, posing as potential clients, revealed a complex network of smugglers operating under pseudonyms like “Harry” and “Rahul,” who charge exorbitant fees for their services. They utilize encrypted messaging platforms like WhatsApp and provide detailed instructions for the crossing, including using Uber drivers to drop off clients near the border and offering guidance through the treacherous terrain.

“It’s a jungle, brother. There will be some thorns and bushes,” one smuggler, “Rahul,” cautioned a Radio-Canada reporter, offering advice on navigating the challenging landscape.

This trend has been fueled by a surge in irregular border crossings from Canada into the U.S. in recent months, with over 13,000 arrests since January, primarily involving Indian and Bangladeshi nationals. This represents a staggering 526% increase since 2022. The influx is attributed to a combination of factors, including the perceived ease of obtaining Canadian visas compared to U.S. visas, the growing presence of criminal organizations in Canada targeting vulnerable migrants, and the spread of misinformation about the border being “open.”

“Basically, all the gangs of Punjab now operate from Canada,” said political scientist Shinder Purewal of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. “And it’s safer.”

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has condemned the practice, denouncing the smugglers for exploiting vulnerable migrants and spreading misinformation. They are actively addressing the issue through increased enforcement, deportation efforts, and public awareness campaigns.

The revelations highlight the urgent need for heightened awareness and robust measures to combat this burgeoning illegal migration network that preys on vulnerable individuals seeking a better life.
