**FRONT ROYAL, VA -** Front Royal, known as the “Canoe Capital of Virginia,” is experiencing a downturn in tourism this summer due to the persistent drought. Businesses reliant on the picturesque Shenandoah River, like Front Royal Outdoors, have seen a significant decline in business.
Don Roberts, owner of Front Royal Outdoors, reports a 30% drop in business last month, blaming the drought for the low river levels and the unusually high temperatures. He notes that the river is now in the low range, but not as low as it was in July when boaters had to walk parts of the river.
Local businesses like PaveMint Smokin’ Taphouse, heavily reliant on river tourism, have also felt the impact. Owner Rachel Failmezger says her business is down 35%, attributing the decline to the weather and lack of river activity.
While the town’s sales and meals taxes are up, lodging tax revenue has taken a hit, with August seeing a $15,000 decrease compared to the same month last year.
Despite the challenges, Roberts remains optimistic, noting that the river will recover and visitors will return. He encourages travelers to understand the fluctuating conditions of the river and prepare accordingly, choosing shorter trips and packing plenty of water and snacks.
“We try our best to inform folks what it really is like…but we can’t beat Mother Nature, we just have to work with it,” Roberts says. He believes that Front Royal’s proximity to D.C. and its attractions, including the mountains, caverns, and a charming Main Street, will continue to draw visitors.
