**Anantapur:** Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 89 powered India D to a commanding 306/5 on the opening day of their Duleep Trophy match against India B at the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur on Thursday.
While Samson stole the show, the day was marred by another disappointing performance from struggling batsman Shreyas Iyer, who was dismissed for a second consecutive duck in the tournament. Iyer, aiming to reclaim his spot in the Indian Test squad, has been struggling for form, with just 104 runs in five innings, averaging a paltry 20.80.
Despite Iyer’s woes, India D’s batting lineup showcased impressive depth. Devdutt Padikkal (50), Srikar Bharat (52) and Ricky Bhui (56) all chipped in with half-centuries to lay the foundation for a strong total.
Padikkal and Bharat combined for a 105-run opening stand before India B, who opted to field first, struck back through Navdeep Saini and Mukesh Kumar. However, Bhui and Samson steadied the ship with a crucial 41-run partnership, taking India D past the 200 mark.
Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar was the pick of the bowlers for India B, claiming three wickets for 60 runs, including the crucial wicket of Bhui. Saini and Mukesh picked up one wicket each.
Samson, who batted with aggression and fluency, smashed 10 fours and three sixes during his 83-ball knock. He added an unbeaten 90-run stand with Saransh Jain (26) to propel India D to a strong position at stumps.
Iyer’s continued struggles have raised concerns about his future in the Indian Test team, with his chances of selection for the upcoming tours of Australia and New Zealand looking increasingly slim. However, Samson’s stellar performance provides a much-needed boost for India D and strengthens his own claims for a place in the national team.
