The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has announced its 2024 shortlist for the coveted Best Building in Scotland award, showcasing a diverse range of architectural achievements across the country. This year, the focus leans heavily on the revival of existing structures, demonstrating the commitment to sustainability and heritage preservation.
Among the five finalists, two major cultural institutions stand out. The Burrell Collection, a Scottish cultural icon, has undergone a transformative refurbishment by John McAslan and Partners, opening up the museum’s heart with a striking three-storey atrium and unlocking new spaces for visitors to enjoy. The Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art has also received a notable update, with the addition of a neighbouring warehouse building, creating a modern and bold extension to the existing gallery.
Other shortlisted projects highlight the creative potential of repurposing and revitalizing existing buildings. A historic hillside farmstead in Aberdeenshire has been meticulously restored and reinvented, showcasing a blend of traditional and contemporary techniques. Meanwhile, North Gate, a social housing scheme in Glasgow, provides attractive and robustly designed homes for older residents, contributing to the city’s wider regeneration efforts.
Completing the shortlist is a futuristic university building, showcasing state-of-the-art scientific research facilities and embodying a sense of quiet, scientific optimism. This contemporary design reflects the importance of scientific learning and research in a modern context.
The RIAS jury, chaired by David Kohn, expressed their admiration for the shortlisted projects, noting their diverse range and high quality. “The unanimously chosen final five demonstrate the breadth of contemporary Scottish architecture, from the finely-crafted to the handsomely urbane,” Kohn said. The winner will be announced in November.
