**Moscow, Russia** – Despite crippling Western sanctions, Aeroflot, Russia’s flag carrier, has continued to operate a relatively normal flight schedule since the start of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. The airline, reliant on Western-built aircraft, has managed to keep its fleet flying through creative means, operating routes to countries maintaining diplomatic ties with Russia, such as China, Thailand, India, and the United Arab Emirates.
However, behind the facade of continued operations, Aeroflot faces a mounting crisis. Reports from German aviation publication AeroTelegraph indicate a severe crew shortage with mass sickouts by cabin crew leading to flight delays and cancellations. The situation has become so dire that Aeroflot has fired three senior executives responsible for inflight services and launched a recruitment drive with hefty pay raises to attract new cabin staff.
To address the immediate shortage, Aeroflot has implemented temporary measures, reducing the required number of flight attendants on various aircraft types. This includes a decrease in the required crew on Airbus A350, Boeing 777, Boeing 737, and Airbus A321 aircraft. Aeroflot aims to restore the original crew levels once the recruitment drive and disciplinary measures, including removal of airport parking spaces and travel benefits for frequent absenteeism, take effect.
While Aeroflot’s efforts to manage the crew shortage parallel measures taken by other airlines facing similar challenges, the situation highlights the mounting pressures on the Russian carrier, operating under the weight of international sanctions and internal challenges.
