**MOSCOW** – Russian forces have seized two villages in the western Kursk region, a senior commander has confirmed, marking a key advance against Ukrainian troops who breached the Russian border last month.
The villages, Nikolayevo-Darino and Darino, were captured following a successful offensive by Russian troops. Located about 15 kilometers from the previous frontlines established by Ukraine, the villages provide Russia with a strategic position to launch attacks on Sverdlikovo, a key logistical center for Ukrainian forces.
Major General Apti Alaudinov, commander of Chechnya’s Akhmat special forces and deputy head of the Russian defense ministry’s military-political department, announced the capture, stating that the entire Russian front has moved forward. He also confirmed ongoing advances by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.
This recent offensive comes after Russia launched a counteroffensive earlier this month, aiming to push back against Ukrainian forces who gained a foothold in the country’s western region.
Ukraine is believed to be attempting to divert Russian forces away from the main counteroffensive by launching attacks in multiple locations along the border.
The Ukrainian offensive in Kursk was the most significant foreign attack on Russia since World War Two. The assault involved thousands of troops, swarms of drones, and heavy weaponry, including Western-made arms.
Russia currently controls approximately 18% of Ukraine. The country continues to advance in both the east and west, having also captured the town of Ukrainsk earlier this week.
