**Bolzano, Italy** – A new mountain hut, designed to withstand the rigors of the Alpine environment, has been completed at 2875 meters above sea level in the Italian Alps. The new structure replaces the original hut, built in 1897, which was severely damaged by an avalanche in 2014.

The architectural concept, developed after an international planning competition, sought to create a landmark in the landscape while harmonizing with the surrounding terrain. The result is a unique, faceted building resembling a crystal, with reddish-colored concrete inspired by the local rock formations.

The hut’s shape is not merely aesthetic; it’s designed to minimize the impact of avalanches. The building’s acute angle, reminiscent of a ship’s bow, deflects the avalanche force, while tie rods embedded in the rock prevent it from sliding downhill.

Construction posed significant challenges. Building materials were transported via a specially built cable car and helicopter, and the crew worked in extreme conditions. The interior features a spacious dining area, bar, storage, workshops, and a fully equipped kitchen on the ground floor, with sleeping quarters and bathrooms on the upper levels.

The new hut, owned by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano in South Tyrol, can accommodate up to 98 people, making it a vital hub for hikers and climbers exploring the high peaks of the region.
