**Kolkata:** Agitating junior doctors in Kolkata have accused the police of pressuring decorators to dismantle their protest site outside Swasthya Bhawan, the state health department headquarters. The doctors claim that decorators, who had initially volunteered to provide tents, beds, fans, and other materials, were forced to remove these items under pressure from police.
The junior doctors allege that around midnight, decorators began removing the materials, citing the need to use them for upcoming Durga Puja marquees. However, the doctors later learned that the decorators were acting under pressure from police.
“We want to reiterate that such pressure tactics will only strengthen our resolve,” said a junior doctor.
The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has denied these allegations as baseless. A senior police officer stated that the police would never pressure decorators and urged the doctors to inform them of any issues they face.
This incident comes amidst ongoing protests by junior doctors over the alleged assault of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. While the second round of talks between junior doctors and the West Bengal government on Wednesday failed to resolve the impasse, the doctors remain firm in their decision to continue their agitation and cease work.
The doctors expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s refusal to provide written minutes of the meeting despite agreeing on several points. This strike, now entering its 40th day, continues to highlight the growing tensions between the junior doctors and the state government.
