**Pune, India:** While calls for increased public transport usage to improve the environment grow louder, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), the city’s public transport provider, is facing increasing scrutiny for its declining service quality. Commuters are experiencing a growing number of bus breakdowns, dilapidated bus shelters, and concerns over reckless driving, making it difficult to rely on PMPML for their daily commute.
Official figures reveal a stark increase in bus breakdowns from January to August 2024. While PMPML-owned buses experienced a relatively stable breakdown rate, leased buses saw a sharp jump, with 2,713 breakdowns in August alone, compared to 1,372 in January. This translates to an average of 18 breakdowns per day for PMPML buses and 69 for leased buses.
Despite earning a significant revenue of ₹11.07 crore in the 2023-24 financial year, PMPML’s service quality has failed to improve. Passengers complain about poor maintenance and outdated vehicles, with many experiencing breakdowns in the middle of the road, forcing them to wait for hours with no communication from the authorities.
“The buses break down abruptly in the middle of the road at least once a week. Along with the inconvenience, it puts us in a danger zone,” said Kiran Deshmukh, a daily commuter from Kothrud.
Passengers also express dissatisfaction with the condition of the buses themselves, highlighting broken seats, deteriorating windows, and loose screws causing noise. “It feels like PMPML is neglecting basic maintenance. For the fare we pay, such service is unacceptable,” said Sunil Patil, another passenger.
The state of bus shelters adds another layer of concern. “Authorities are earning a lot from advertisements, but the shelters are in poor condition. This is not fair to those who rely on buses for daily commutes,” said Nilanjan Das, a resident of Viman Nagar.
While PMPML officials have not provided any concrete solutions, the growing number of breakdowns and complaints raise serious questions about the future of public transport in Pune. With the city’s population continuing to grow, the need for a reliable and efficient public transport system is crucial, and PMPML’s current state is failing to meet that demand.
