**MUNICH, GERMANY** – The world’s largest folk festival, Oktoberfest, has ramped up security measures in response to a deadly knife attack in Solingen last month. Metal detectors will be deployed for the first time in the festival’s 189-year history, resulting in potentially longer wait times for attendees.
Authorities have emphasized that there are no specific threats directed at the festival, which begins Saturday with the traditional keg-tapping and runs through October 6. Despite this, security measures have been significantly increased, with over 600 police officers, 2,000 security personnel, and over 50 cameras deployed throughout the festival grounds. The festival site will also be fenced off, and attendees are prohibited from bringing knives, glass bottles, or backpacks.
The heightened security measures come in the wake of the August 23 attack in Solingen, where a Syrian asylum-seeker stabbed three people to death and injured eight others. The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack, though no evidence has been presented to corroborate this claim.
The attack in Solingen has spurred a national conversation about security and immigration in Germany. The Interior Ministry has extended temporary border controls to all nine of its frontiers, a move that could strain European unity.
Security experts, such as Professor Peter Neumann of King’s College London, have pointed out that Oktoberfest is a high-profile event that could be targeted by extremists seeking to generate international headlines and instill fear. He highlighted recent foiled plots against the Olympics in Paris and Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna as evidence of the growing threat posed by extremist groups.
Despite the challenges, Oktoberfest organizers remain confident that the festival will be safe for its millions of attendees. Clemens Baumgärtner, the festival’s organizer, promised a safe public space, stating that Oktoberfest will be “the safest place in Germany” during its 16-day run.
