Thu Sep 19 07:27:35 UTC 2024: ## Reserve Forces Chief Advocates for Quality Childcare, Emphasizing “Whole Nation” Need
**NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (AFNS) -** Chief Master Sgt. Israel Nuñez, the senior enlisted advisor to the chief of the Air Force Reserve and AFRC command chief, has highlighted the critical need for quality childcare for military families, particularly those in the reserve forces. Speaking at the Air and Space Forces Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference on September 17, Nuñez emphasized that “family readiness is mission readiness.”
Nuñez, a father of two daughters, passionately advocated for accessible and affordable childcare solutions for reserve members, many of whom serve on weekends and are often faced with childcare challenges. He stressed the importance of communicating the unique needs and responsibilities of reserve members, particularly the variety of statuses and roles they fill beyond traditional weekend duty.
“We need a DoD solution for contracted, quality, and accessible daycare,” Nuñez stated. “Childcare starts with leadership. We urge our leadership to increase the top line and put your money where your mouth is. Childcare is personal.”
Nuñez further outlined his efforts to engage with congressional leaders and Department of Defense leadership to address the challenges faced by reserve families. He highlighted the successful implementation of weekend childcare programs at Pittsburgh Air Reserve Station and Dobbins Air Reserve Base, yet stressed the need for further expansion and a “whole nation” approach to childcare solutions.
Joining Nuñez on the panel were Lt. Col. Maria Quinn, military child advocate; Leslie Janaros, Five and Thrive co-founder; and Lesley Smith, Air Force Services Center chief of Air Force Child and Youth Programs. Together, they emphasized the vital role of quality childcare in supporting military families and ensuring the strength and readiness of the armed forces.
