Thu Sep 19 11:47:00 UTC 2024: ## Drunk Nottingham Forest Fan Bans Himself from Football After Attacking Brighton Fan
A lifelong Nottingham Forest supporter has been banned from attending football matches for three years after throwing coins at Brighton fans, injuring a woman.
Stephen Shaw, 62, from Bilborough, Nottinghamshire, admitted to throwing missiles and assaulting the woman during a Premier League match at the Amex Stadium on March 10th, 2023.
Shaw travelled to the game by coach and consumed a significant amount of alcohol en route. After Brighton’s 1-0 victory, he threw coins towards the home end, striking a woman in the head and causing two abrasions.
Despite initially refusing to comment to police, Shaw pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates Court. His lawyer described him as a “caring family man” who deeply regretted his actions and travelled from Nottinghamshire to attend the hearing in person as a sign of respect.
The court handed Shaw a three-year Football Banning Order, meaning he cannot attend matches or be in specific areas of Nottingham during game days. He also received a conditional discharge, meaning he will avoid punishment for throwing missiles unless he re-offends within the next year.
Sussex Police praised the effectiveness of the Amex Stadium’s CCTV system and the quick action of Brighton and Hove Albion staff in detaining Shaw.
PC Darren Balkham, the dedicated football officer for Sussex Police, stated: “Shaw’s behaviour was totally unacceptable, he not only threw coins towards supporters but also caused injury to another fan inside the stadium.” He emphasized the police’s commitment to ensuring all fans can enjoy matches safely and will take action against those who put others at risk.
