**Yellowstone National Park, WY -** A 60-year-old woman visiting from Windsor, New Hampshire, suffered serious burns after falling through a thin crust into scalding water near Old Faithful. The incident occurred on September 18th when the woman, who was walking off-trail with her husband and dog, broke through the fragile ground near the Mallard Lake Trailhead.
She sustained second- and third-degree burns on her leg, while her husband and dog were unharmed. The woman was initially treated at a park medical clinic and later transported by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
The National Park Service reminds visitors to exercise extreme caution when visiting hydrothermal areas, emphasizing the importance of staying on designated boardwalks and trails. The ground in these areas is often thin and fragile, with scalding water just beneath the surface.
Pets are also prohibited on boardwalks, hiking trails, in the backcountry, and in thermal areas of the park.
The incident is currently under investigation by National Park Service officials. It is the first reported thermal injury in Yellowstone in 2024.
