**MOSCOW** – Despite Apple’s ongoing export ban to Russia, the country’s leading electronics retailer M.Video-Eldorado and mobile network operator MTS have begun pre-sales of the new iPhone 16, offering the devices at prices hundreds of dollars higher than in the United States.
The move comes over a year after Apple halted all product sales and services in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Both retailers claim to be the first in Russia to unveil the latest iPhone model, with M.Video stating deliveries will begin next week and MTS expecting physical sales to start soon.
The new iPhones are likely entering Russia through a “grey import” scheme, a practice endorsed by the Russian government for brands that exited the country following the invasion. These imports typically transit through countries that have not imposed sanctions on Russia, such as Turkey, Kazakhstan, and the UAE.
However, the “grey” import route comes at a cost for Russian consumers. M.Video’s starting price for the 128GB iPhone 16 is 112,999 roubles ($1,225), over $400 more expensive than the U.S. price of $799. The 1TB iPhone Pro Max is available for pre-order at 249,999 roubles ($2,710), compared to the U.S. price of $1,599.
This situation highlights the challenges companies face in controlling their supply chains when exiting a market. While Apple seeks to restrict access to its products, Russia’s reliance on Western goods and technology remains evident. This dependency is a concern for Moscow, which has encouraged officials to abandon iPhones due to alleged security risks. However, Apple has denied these claims.
