Thu Sep 19 07:27:33 UTC 2024: ## DRC-China Ties Strengthened: Mutual Respect Drives Development
**Kinshasa, DRC** – The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and China are forging a strong partnership, with mutual respect serving as the bedrock for their collaboration, according to Therese Kayikwamba Wagner, DRC State Minister for Foreign Affairs.
In a recent interview, Wagner highlighted the tangible benefits of bilateral cooperation, emphasizing its impact on infrastructure and key sectors of the DRC’s economy. She attributed the progress to the upgraded relationship between the two nations, established during President Felix Tshisekedi’s state visit to China in May 2023, which elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
This strengthened partnership has resulted in successful collaborations in infrastructure construction, energy, and agriculture. Notably, the DRC joined the Belt and Road Initiative in January 2021, accelerating bilateral cooperation.
China has become the DRC’s largest investment destination in Africa, with bilateral trade reaching $12.34 billion in the first half of 2024. The completion of projects like the Busanga hydropower plant and Kinsuka Substation, alongside the recently launched Kinshasa’s ring roads project, showcase the effective support provided by the Belt and Road Initiative in enhancing infrastructure connectivity, facilitating movement of people and goods, and accelerating economic growth in the DRC.
Wagner expressed optimism about expanding cooperation with China in various sectors, particularly in trade and investment liberalization, and exploring opportunities in emerging fields like digital economy and artificial intelligence.
“China has made considerable progress in these areas, and we are eager to deepen exchanges and cooperation with them,” she said.
The DRC State Minister also underscored the shared historical experiences and mission connecting China and Africa, emphasizing the need for a unified voice in international affairs to safeguard the interests of emerging market countries and developing nations.
Looking ahead, Wagner expressed a commitment to further strengthening diplomatic and cultural exchanges with China, promoting mutual learning and fostering common development. “I aim to strengthen cooperation and seek common development with my Chinese friends,” she concluded.
