**Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia** – Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) is exploring the possibility of introducing hybrid and SUV-styled Cross variants of its popular Xpander MPV in the future.
The announcement comes on the heels of the launch of the facelifted Xpander, which features minor styling and equipment upgrades but retains the existing 1.5-liter petrol engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. MMM is also considering a switch to a CVT gearbox in line with regional trends.
The hybrid powertrain, already available in Thailand, features a 1.6-liter petrol engine paired with a powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery. This system, similar to Honda’s e:HEV, prioritizes electric drive for efficient performance and fuel economy.
The Xpander Cross, also available in Thailand and Indonesia, boasts a more rugged aesthetic with black body cladding, skid plates, and roof rails. This variant is currently not offered in Malaysia.
The current Xpander is offered in standard and Plus variants priced at RM99,980 and RM109,800 respectively (on-the-road without insurance).
MMM has not yet confirmed pricing or launch dates for potential hybrid and Cross variants, but the company’s exploration of these options suggests a commitment to expanding the Xpander’s appeal in the Malaysian market.
The news has generated mixed reactions among car enthusiasts, with some expressing excitement over the potential for a more efficient and versatile Xpander, while others remain skeptical about pricing.
