**SINGAPORE** – A recent survey by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has revealed a growing support for the death penalty in Singapore, with 77.4% of respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing with its use for serious crimes like murder and drug trafficking. This figure represents an increase from 73.7% in 2021.
The survey, conducted in April-June 2023, polled over 2,000 residents, with a focus on the mandatory death penalty for three specific offenses: drug trafficking, firearm offences, and intentional murder.
For all three offenses, the survey showed statistically significant increases in the proportion of respondents supporting the mandatory death penalty. Notably, support for the mandatory death penalty in drug trafficking cases rose from 65.6% in 2021 to 68.7% in 2023.
While some respondents who did not support the mandatory death penalty favored discretionary death penalty or life imprisonment, the survey found that the majority of respondents still supported some form of the death penalty for these three crimes.
The survey also showed an increased perception that the death penalty acts as a deterrent against these serious crimes. Respondents were particularly confident in the fairness and thoroughness of Singapore’s criminal justice system when handling death penalty cases.
The findings of this survey indicate a continued strong public support for the death penalty in Singapore, with a growing conviction in its effectiveness as a deterrent. However, it is important to note that this survey, while comprehensive, does not necessarily reflect the nuanced views of all Singaporeans on this complex issue.
